Following a rate study in August 2020 by RCAP (a non-profit who specializes in rural water and sewer operations), a recommendation was made to Council to do an immediate sewer rate increase, followed by incremental increases. RCAP’s evaluation determined that our rate was not effectively covering the expenses to run and maintain the operation, therefore, putting the Village at great financial risk. In September 2020, the sewer rate was increased by 10% with a plan to implement further increases on January 1 of every year to follow. In January 2021, there will be a 7.5% sewer rate increase and in January 2022, there will be another 7.5% sewer rate increase which will catch up our system on years of failure to increase the rates that were needed. Beyond 2022, there will be yearly 3% rate increases to account for inflation. Beginning January 2021, the water rates will begin with their yearly inflation increases of 3%.
Please know that this was not an easy decision to make and took months of evaluation to reach this verdict. Ultimately, providing drinking water and treating wastewater is one of our greatest and most costly responsibilities as a Village. We have a 100+ year old sewer line system in great need of repair and our focus must be to continue providing these services to the best our ability without putting the Village at financial risk.
